USB missing storage

Hi, I'm using a 16 GB usb memory device for storage, and even though I only have 4 GB in use currently, it says I only have 2.9 GB free. What is all that extra space being used by and how do I free it back up?

The Xbox itself only uses 512 MB of space that you can't access, so that shouldn't be responsible for the type of gap you're talking about. Other than that, I can't think of anything else that would eat up space without you being able to see it. Have you gone into System > Storage to see what's displayed on the USB drive?

Yes I have. ~4GB in game related memory and the 512MB of xbox stuff is all there is.

when you first used this usb on your xbox, did you decide to divide the space up? X amount for the 360 and X amount for the PC?

Thats the only thing I can think of. Have you tried using it on the PC? you wont be able to see the 360 data but you can still check out the free space and try to copy a photo to the flash drive.

If the photo saves to the drive, then it was divided for use on the 360 and PC

I checked it out on my computer, and I actually can see the xbox 360 data. It apparently is taking up 14GB even though when on the xbox it only shows 4GB being in use.

That is strange indeed. besides saves and such, do you also have DLC or arcade games stored on the USB?

I would try moving everything back to the 360's HDD if you have enough room and then try reformatting the USB once it has been cleared. hopefully that would fix you available memory.

Also try customizing the USB so you can use the slider to designate some space. try 13gb for XBOX and 3 GB free.
