USB Memory Stick Loses info

I have two xboxes, one being a newer black model and one of the older white models.  I have formatted a USB drive on the newer xbox and it works firne.  I am able to transfer content and saves to the older xbox without problems.  The problem is that if I plug the USB drive into the newer xbox after content was added from the old xbox, it complains that the USB drive isn't formatted.  If I return it to the old xbox, it is still unformatted.  Could this be specific to the USB device I am using or will it do this for all USB devices?  Is there a way around this as the newer box doesn't have a memory card slot.

Are you connecting the USB stick before powering the console on? Some brands have a problem with this, so try connecting it once the console is fully powered up.

I have tried both ways and it 'unformatted' the USB drive each time it was moved from the white 360 to the black 360.
