update required, but is currently unavailable?

I have tried repeatedly, but never been successful, in connecting to xbox live. I almost got there yesterday, and some kind of update was installed because the home changed. I did not touch anything while the update was occurring. I now get the following error message.

A system update is required to sign in to Xbox Live, but the update is currently unavailable. If the problem persists, visit www.xbox.com/support
