update failed

My xbox was functioning fine until it tried to do an update. I now have this on my screen:

SYSTEM UPDATE STOPPED

Can't read the update from your xbox hard drive. Please reattach it. Your console will automatically restart and continue the update. If the problem persists visit www.xbox.com/support

Status code

335A-396B-B380-0F00-C000-0185.

I have tried to update with a usb stick, and by burning a cd.

I have tried pushing the sync button while turning on the system.

I have tried connecting the system directly to the modem.

I tried unplugging the Kinect and restarting the system.

I have tried starting up the system with the disc tray halfway open.

I tried unplugging the system from the Internet and restarting it. (I have a dlink-655 router connected to a SA cable modem.)

Nothing makes any difference. I'm not new to computers (I have a Comp TiA A+ and a Cisco network+ cert) but I'm new to working on xboxes.

In desperation, I went and bought another system. It connects and updates fine. Nothing wrong with my connection.

What else can a man do to fix this?

Maybe I wasn't very clear in my original post -  The system is completely locked up, the "update failed" screen is all it will display except for a few seconds if I open/close the dvd tray - it displays "updating" for a minute then right back to the same "update failed" screen. Is there a way around that screen?

Thanks for the reply.

BHL,

sending it to MS is exactly what I don't want to do. Why should I pay them to fix something they broke? If it was something I did, I would have no problem sending it back to the manufacturer to repair my mistake. But for them to send out an "update" that bricks my system, then demand I pay to get it fixed - that's not capitalism, that's extortion. And If I did send it back and get it fixed, how do I know they aren't going to brick it again?

Hellspawn6,

I swapped drives with the system I just bought. I put the new hard drive in the old system. Basically the same result, the codes were a little different. The same "system update stopped" screen, but the last four digits of the status code went from 0185 to 0034. There is an 0032 listed in the status codes section, (in the same section as 0185), but no 0034. I then took the drive out and restarted the system without a drive, the code went from 0034 to 000E, which is in the list. Sadly, this code is in the same section as the 0185. At least I now know the system is communicating with the hard drive, and there is probably nothing wrong with the hard drive.

To test that, I fired up the new system with the old drive in it. It successfully updated!

I swapped drives again and with the old drive in the old system. the old system went back to the same "system update stopped" screen with the 0185 at the end of the status code. At least now I can definitely say there is nothing wrong with my hard drive or my connection to MS Live, and my console is communicating with my hard drive.

I bought it the day the Kinect came out.

After digging around on the net, I found a place that has all the updates in order.

It seems the updates are not cumulative.

I have no idea which update bricked mine, but there seems to be a possibility the system is hung up waiting on that exact update to finish.

So, my next line of attack is to start at the time I bought the console, and try to update, one at the time, until I hopefully can find the one it is waiting on and finish the update.

Some places even say it might be waiting for a update file on a game that might have been in the console when it was trying to update.

This could take a while.

Thanks for the help.

Hello hitekrdnk93360,

Are you sure that the error code that you got ended in C000-0185?

Take a look at the 5th section of our page for Error occurs after console software update.  There you'll see the code that ends in D000-0185.  If you try those steps there for that error, do they help?

Give those steps a try, and let us know how it goes. Thanks!

Read what I posted 12-10-2012 6:46pm. Even if I mis-read the code, the D000-0185 says remove the storage device and replace it - already covered. Thanks for the reply.
