Unable to Connect to Xbox Live

Hello first time poster here. So I use a wired connection through my Windows 7 Sony Viao. I receive my connection for my laptop from a neighbors wireless Netgear source. Recently the internet was down so I used an ethernet cord connected to our dsl router so I could surf the internet. When I did this I had to accept something like 'changing my DHCP to a wired connection.' I accepted it but ever since I am unable to connect to Xbox Live using my laptop and a wired connection. My wireless connection is shared. Every time I go to test my connection on live it says cannot obtain IP address, although before using a wired source to my laptop I never had this problem. I am by no means an internet genius so I have no idea what I did wrong or what to do to fix it. Thanks.
