Turning off External hard drive

hello, I've been using a wd external hard drive with the xbox one. I noticed that lights continue to blink on the drive after I shut down the xbox even after selecting external hard drive shut down from settings. To remedy this, I plugged the hard drive into my receiver so that it turns off with the unit. Is this ok to do for the hard drive?

thanks

What HD do you have exactly?  Is it the kind with an external power source, or one that is powered via USB?  What do you mean you plug it into your receiver?

I have a Seagate and mine wont turn off unless I have my Xbox One on energy saving mode (which I recommend anyways)

It's one that uses an external power cord. I plug it into the outlet that is on the back of my receiver that turns off with my Xbox. The light flashes no matter what setting the xbox has as long as the usb is plugged in and the power cord is plugged in.
