Transferring gamertag to a different Live ID

Hi,

Here's my problem: I have an old Windows Live ID that I no longer use, and it's associated with a gamertag. I also have a newer Live ID that I do use, and it's associated with the gamertag I'm currently posting as. However, I'd like to use the newer Live ID with the gamertag that's associated with my old Live ID. I do not wish to keep using this gamertag.

Is it possible to somehow swap the two gamertags? I also thought about having both gamertags deleted and then re-registering the one I wish to keep with the new Live ID, but was informed by Xbox support that a gamertag thus removed wouldn't be available for re-registering. Since Xbox support was otherwise unable to assist me, they recommended I post here on the forums.

So, is there any way to achieve what I want? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You would need to change the gamertag of the one you want to use in order to free it up to be used on the ID you want to use it with.

Can you elaborate a bit on the "change the gamertag of the one you want to use" part? You mean like, rename it? Doesn't that involve renaming two gamertags, with the associated fees (2x 800 MS points)? I was hoping there was a way to do this that didn't cost money.

Yes, you would have to rename it and pay the fees. There's no other way.

If you just want to swap Live IDs, there's no need to pay to change gamertags. Use a 3rd Live ID to park one of the gamertags on; move the other gamertag to the freed-up Live ID; then move the first gamertag to the now-free Live ID, and the 3rd Live ID is no longer associate with any gamertag.

Unfortunately, there's a 30-day wait between Live ID changes, so you can't do this all at once.

As far as I can see, the only way to switch a gamertag to a different Live ID is on an Xbox:

support.xbox.com/.../manage-live-id.aspx

However, I use Games for Windows Live only. If there's a way to do what you described without an Xbox, please let me know. So far, I haven't found one.
