Slow Speed

Hello,

I know there are already lots of threads on this topic, but I have yet to find a solution in any of them, so I've started another one.  :)

Thanks in advance to anyone who tries to help.

I just bought a new xbox 360 S w/ kinect.  Everything works fine except I get poor streaming video; it stops to buffer a lot.  I ran a speedtest with the IE app at speedof.me (non-flash) and consistently get around 1.7mb.  I have a 50mb cable connection and get stellar results on all other devices.  Usually anywhere between 20mb and 50mb.

I have tried:

  • Wireless (2 different routers)
  • Wired (through router and direct to cable modem)
  • Static (public) IP and local IP (dhcp and static).
  • Different ethernet cables
  • Rebooting all devices (routers, modems, xbox)
  • Port forwarding
  • Clearing the xbox cache
  • Resetting the xbox networking
  • Various non flash speedtests (since the xbox can't do flash)
  • Talked to my ISP support
  • Talked to xbox support

I always get around 1.7mb on the xbox no matter how I connect.

Nobody has had a solution yet.

The only thing I haven't tried is taking the xbox to a friend's house and testing on another internet connection.  I'll be doing that this afternoon, but was hoping someone on here would have another suggestion I could try.

Thanks.

If you're using a WIFI connection for your Xbox, then the problem could be that you're using multiple devices on that same network which will make the connecting very slow. The S-model Xbox needs a lot of MB off of your network.

Solution:

When using multiple devices on the same network as your Xbox 360 Console, try disconnecting some of them and after doing that re-doing the speed test on your Xbox 360 Console.

I went to my brother's house to test the speeds on his internet connection and still got 1.7mb wired or wireless.  However, I also got that exact same speed on HIS xbox, even while getting 15mb on his computer.  I did some more googling using different search terms than before, and I think I found the answer.

Accoring to this post you simply cannot use the IE app for speed tests, because it goes through MS's servers which set restrictions on app bandwidth, etc.  That makes sense to me.  I brought the xbox home and tried to stream some HD media over Netflix which worked fine.  So I guess it was just the Comedy Central app that was running poorly.

As for my slow downloads, I timed a 58MB download and it took about 1min 55secs, which isn't terrible, but isn't great.  Still, it's faster than the 1.7mb I was seeing on the speedtest results.

I'm going to assume this is standard behavior for the xbox and call this issue resolved.

Thanks for your help everyone and I hope this answer sames some poor fool some time down the road.  I really think the Microsoft techs I spoke with should have known this.

Thanks to everyone who replied.  I'll answer each person below.

Weylyn, here are my trace results, which look terrible, but would that affect video streaming from Comedy Central or running a speedtest through the IE app?  Can anyone else post their trace so I can compare?

SamxBroski, I have tried wired and wireless (see OP) and did all my testing between 5am-7am this morning when nobody else in the house was awake, so no other devices were being used.  Plus, as stated in the OP, my other devices get great speeds from the same speedtest sites where the xbox gets crappy speeds.  If it was a usage on my network, my other devices would suffer too.

DutchResistance, I'm using a wired connection, but get the same speeds either way.  I have only used the Comedy Central app for steaming and that's where I've seen the constant buffering.  Even before that I noticed that my downloads were a lot slower than they should be given my connection speed.  I'd have to download something and time it to factor the speed I'm getting that way, but speed tests through the IE app are consistently 1.7mb or 1.8mb, wile my other devices are consistently getting 25mb to 50mb.

Again, thank you all for trying to help me out.

Hello LilyBean08,

I see you already tried a lot of things. Does the problem occur only when streaming videos from the dashboard or also when using apps (like netflix)? And when downloading games/dlc, do you get around your max downloading speed or not?

edit: I would always try to use a wired connection if possible.

Trying running a trace route to see if that identifies any issues.

On your PC go to start -> run then type CMD

This will open a command prompt window and then type

tracert xeas.xboxlive.com

This will show you how many hops you have to make to reach xbox live and might show where the delay is.  With this information you can then talk to your ISP about possible routing issues.
