Setting up new 320GB - on a different console

My son is visiting for Christmas. We both have Xbox 360 S (his is still back in California, mine is here in Texas). His 320 GB has gone bad (won't boot xbox - error code E68) and he brought just the "bad" 320GB with him during his visit. We just bought a replacement 320GB (new). Can we use my Xbox 360S here in Texas to set up his new 320GB, re-download game, etc and then take back home and plug into his California console? We also bought a data transfer cable to see if there is any content we can transfer off of the "bad" 320GB drive.
