Screen resolution questions

I was looking at the screen resolution options and the 1080p option is blacked out. My TV is a 720p 32" HDTV, is that why I cannot select 1080p? I'm just curious because I am going to buy a 40" 1080p HDTV soon.

Also, would it be better to use the 720p option on a 720p HDTV or the 1360x768 option? I ask this because when I select the "Optimal Resolution" option it picks 1360x738 for me.

Via the manual of your tv - does it actually support 1080p?

The HDMI tech. passes data back and forth - if that display option isn't supported by your tv set it will not be a selectable option on the Xbox 360 in the settings when using the HDMI cable.

My Xbox is the black elite and I use an HDMI cable to connect.

Thanks for the answer Cubicle, that's what I figured I just wanted to be sure.

Still curious about the 1360x738 option and how that works though.
