Running sound through an amplifier

Hi, hoping someone can help me, because I'm going nuts over here... I bought a amplifier and speakers last night and want to run the sound through the amp instead of the tv. I purchased a HDMI cable and optical cable today and have plugged both in. The picture is perfect, but regarding the sound, running the optical cable between the Xbox and amplifier, what else do I need? I tried the AV composite cable off my old arcade one and plugged the RCA leads into the amp to the TV, but it does nothing. (Currently using an Xbox slimline) I would appreciate any help I can get!

You have a couple of options, depending on the type of AMP you have.

If your AMP can handle HDMI input AND HDMI outputs, then run the xbox to the appropriate HDMI input and connect the TV to the HDMI output.  Select the appropriate input on the AMP, and you should be set.

If your AMP cannot handle that, then just run the HDMI from the XBOX to the TV and the optical from the XBOX to the AMP.  Set the AMP on the appropriate input on the AMP, and you should be set.

I have an old xbox without HDMI, but this may work depending on what type of AMP inputs you have. I purchased a VGA input cable so the video is direct to TV existing PC port. On the VGA adaptor there is also a port for a fiber optic sound cable. The fiber optic goes directly into my AMP receiver. This option will cost you a few bucks to get teh right cables, but may be easier depending on input port options available.

Also with most AMPs or receivers, as stated above, it is best to plug everything into the AMP and have one cable back to your TV. THere is a much more powerful audio processer in the AMP over your TV and all audio signals will sound much better.

Cheers!

Hey, thank for the replies :-)

I bought a cheap sound system from Kmart, Telenfunken 5.1ch DVD/amp, it does not have a HDMI output. So the xbox is running straight into the tv. The optical cable is running from the Xbox to the amp but for the life of me, I cannot find an option on the audio output to pick up the signal from the optical cable.

I've checked the audio settings with the tv and I don't see anything to change on there either. I'm sure there is a simple solution, but it's doing my head in :/

Is the optical connection on the amp an output only maybe?

Looking at the manual, it lists it as optical audio output. Guess I wasted $30 on that cable. Wonder of there is another way I can go about it

FYI if anyone else is looking here for info.

This is what resolved the issue. Carrie had to run the sound to her TV,then from the TV out to the receiver and all is good to go!
