"Can't read the update from the disc, please reinsert the disc to continue the update"

My console seems to be stuck, I bought the console used today. I plugged it in and turned it on only to be greeted by that error. The code is "23EF 3151 B200 0700 C000 0013". I tried using the hdd from my other xbox, same problem, tried installing the latest update via both CD and USB, still the problem persists. I have also downloaded basically every xbox update going and tried it via usb, still nothing.

Anything I can try? This is really frustrating. I have no way of contacting the seller to find out what game was last inserted. The MFR date is 2006-08-17, cheers

The console is looking for a previous version of the system update. Follow these steps:

    1. Find a USB flash drive with at least 90 MB of free space.
    2. Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.

Note
The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system (Microsoft Windows).

  1. Download the system update for error code xxxx-3151-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx.
  2. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
  3. Unzip the file. If you are using Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click the .zip file to unzip it.
  4. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.
  5. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
  6. If there is a disc in the console, remove it.
  7. Turn off the console.
  8. Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.
  9. Plug the USB flash drive with the update into a USB port on console.
  10. Turn on the console. When the console starts, the software update should automatically start.

    Give this a try OP.

And well done on the bootsale pickup. All I ever find are odd socks and shoes punctured footballs:P.

Edited the post after restarting the console (said something about insufficient memory so rebooted to plug the HDD in).

And yeah, haha. I was surprised to see it myself, if it worked off the bad I would be happy as larry :P

Long story short, now it's hanging at the boot screen (xbox 360 logo)

I'll leave it at the boot screen for a good while to see if anything happens.

That would have been nice hey :). No such luck though!.

Few other things to try here if you still have no joy.

Make sure that you have enough storage space

The latest console software update requires at least 190 megabytes (MB) of storage space (or 256 MB if you live in Japan). If this does not fix the problem, try the next solution.

Clear the Xbox 360 console cache

Go to memory> highlight storage device> press Y> select yes.

Then try the steps again from my first post.

Hopefully something here will get this sorted for you, if not I'm out of ideas fella.

The HDD has enough space, plugged it into my other Xbox and it's showing that it has 13.2gb space, and I am unable to clear the cache as I can't get past the boot screen. Oh well :( I'll just keep tring

Sorry mate clearing the cache was a stupid suggestion, given I knew the problem was you were stuck at the logo screen.

I will have a mooch about and see if I can find anymore info, keep us posted.
