Question about license transfer and moving data to my new console's HDD

I'm not sure if this belongs in this area.

Recently bought a new console 250 GB console since my old 20 GB one no longer works.  I also bought a hard-drive transfer cable so I could transfer my Gamertag, saves, DLC, etc over to my working console. However I was told it was better to do the licesnce transfer before transfering anyhing over to  my new console because doing so would allow me to play my DLC without being connected to Xbox Live. I also read that transfering data from the original HDD erases everything on the HDD you are transfering it to. Is this true?

Also is it recommended to do the license transfer before or after transferring all my other stuff over to my new console with the HDD transfer cable.?

1) Be sure the transfer cable is an official MS one. Many third party transfer cables have been known to cause data loss when used.

2) You can do the license transfer anytime, you just need your XBL account on the new console before you start the process.

3) Yes. Once you transfer everything from the 20GB hdd it will be empty.
