Problems with Xbox Live Gold

Recently I have had troubles connecting to multiplayer games because I've been told that I no longer have Xbox Live Gold. This is weird as I had renewed my yearly subscription just a couple months ago. So I tried to enter the code of one of those 2 day Gold free trial cards, and it tells me that I can't redeem this card because I already have Gold. What is wrong and why is this happening? I essentially have Gold membership, but don't at the same time.
