problems with hdd / original xbox games

I was lucky enough to have someone buy a 4 gb slim for me, but i needed more memory, so i bought a 250 GB hdd off eBay. But for some reason, my original xbox game wouldn't work, but i put it down to a fault with an update. So i re-downloaded one of them, and they still wouldn't work. so after a bit of searching i found out that it could be down to the hdd being an unofficial model.

So my question is, if i was to buy an official xbox usb stick (i tried formatting an unofficial one, transferring the game over to the usb, but it still wouldn't work), transfer the game to the usb memory, would the game load , assuming that the official usb has the emulation software required to run original xbox games, or do have i have to cut my losses and buy an official hdd.

Any help would be appreciated.

You need an official HDD. USB Memory Units will not work for original XBOX games.
