Problem connecting to friend (we both have open NAT)

Me and a buddy of mine can't connect to each other. Weird thing is, it says both of our NAT types are Open. Any suggestions? It happens off and on. Some days we can connect to each other, but on other days we'll have to have a friend make a game/party in order for us to play together.

Some modem and router combinations can cause this issue.  The xbox reports an Open NAT, when the NAT is not really open.

What is the make and model of your modem, and your router?

I have a Linksys WRT54G router and a Motorola SURFboard modem.

What does your friend have? - InvisiNAT usually shows up when there is a gateway involved - which is basically a modem that has routing software.

Additionally who is your Internet Service Provider? Sometimes if on their end you guys are routed from the same servers they won't connect you directly to each other, it's wierd but happens so if you guys live close to each other this could be a limitation on the ISP end.  Though if this is the case you would have to have the same ISP.

Linksys routers and Surfboard modems typically work well together.  You should not have an issue there.

You should update the firmware in your Linksys router and make sure it has UPnP enabled.

@Antillion - I'm not sure what my friend has, but I'll ask him. My ISP is Comcast Cable. We do live close to each other though. I'd said it's about a 10 minute drive to his house from mine.

@de manace - My firmware is up to date and UPnP is enabled.

Do you use any other settings in your Linksys, like Port forwarding or DMZ settings, for your Xbox?

If so, you may want to simplify things.  Having UPnP enabled while having Port forwarding or DMZ settings can cause strange behavior in routers.

I know that DMZ is turned on, not exactly sure about port forwarding. I'll try turning DMZ off and see how things go.

Nice, I have Comcast as well, so does one of my co-workers. Sadly the two of us can't connect to each other either because of how comcast is routing the two of us to the internet, somehow we can't talk to each other directly due to their servers traffic flow.

That doesn't mean that is absolutely what is happening for you, but it is possible.

Above trying to turn off the DMZ, try restoring the router to factory defaults and then test, if it doesn't work set the DMZ back up and see what happens.

Have you tried to contact Comcast and tell them about it or is that a lost cause?
