Problem adding nephew to Xbox Live Family Gold.

I want to add my nephew to my family gold, I downloaded his gamertag to my console, I'm in Sweden, he's in the UK, I can log into his GT no problem, when I try to add him to my family it throws up a very useless bland message:

I go to accounts.live.com and can log into his account fine, my account fine, etc. etc. so no idea why I cannot add him to my family, the only thing I can think of is because he has an active xbox live gold subscription with stored credit card details and it's set to auto renew? Any help/advice would be gratefully appreciate.

Every person in the family plan has to be in the same country. So if his is a UK account and yours is Sweden, it won't work.

Sorry but that is simply not correct. I have been running an Xbox Live Gold family for the last two years with myself in Sweden and three friends in the UK, I have now removed one of those friends and want instead to add my nephew.

It shouldn't work that way. That's per the FAQ for the plan - support.xbox.com/.../billing-points-family-pack

When you add a family member to an Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, you have to add it to the same console as the primary account holder. However, after you add that family member to your Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack, they can recover their account on a different console and still remain a part of the Family Pack.

Note The family member does have to remain in same country as the primary account holder.

Well whether it says that or not it's simply not how it works, I'm in Sweden and created the family 2 years ago, added three friends in the UK and it has worked fine with them for the past two years, only problem is now when I removed one person and tried to add a different one.

To test if it's a location/IP/country/change of policy issue etc I just tried adding another friend in the UK who was a Silver xbox live member and it added them into my family no problems at all, so the problem must specifically be with my nephew's Xbox Live account.

If your nephew is under the age of majority, that can cause the problem. The new migration option lifted the ban on Family Plans across national boundaries, IIRC.  Suggest you have a chat with a support agent (Option 2) at your support number: Sweden: 020 79 1133  or UK  0800 587 1102

And I should add he has his own credit card linked to the account, you can't be a "kid" and have a credit card so it's not that either.

Ah, but in the wonderful world of computerized databases, reality takes a back seat to the data. That's why I suggested contacting the folks who can fix it.

I used the online support chat and apparently it will be fixed by someone there who will manually add my nephew to my xbox live family :)
