Prexisting offline child account to Gold?

My 9 year old nephew has an offline Xbox 360 account. I'm trying to upgrade his current pre-existing account to an Xbox Live child account. Currently my nephew, nor his mother have Xbox live or Microsoft accounts. After attempting to figure this out myself, to no avail, I did some digging and the consensus seems to be that this is impossible to upgrade a pre-existing child's Xbox account to a gold account and retain all the saved games, achievements, etc from his pre-existing offline account. Everything I've seen was from roughly half a year ago, is this still the case? Will he just have to deal with losing all his work from the past two years?

If someone could please confirm or deny this, that'd be great. I'm getting sick of trying to figure this out.

Unfortunately, yes this is still the case. He can still use everything offline, but if he wants to play online, you will need to go through the steps of creating a new online child account.
