Possible to update to newest version of Xbox 360 system software from a much older version?

I had this problem for awhile and I did list it some time ago... but wasn't sure of the actual problem. I'm now aware that the Xbox 360 I bought online wasn't updated regularly and now stuck with it. However, I also recall that this didn't keep me from signing in to Xbox Live for a few months until the May 2011 update. (The warranty sticker is still intact so I assume nobody modded it) Now when I try to sign in I'm asked to update and when I do it halts when "Applying Update" appears on the screen and gives me an error message. I checked it and it associates to the description of "Looking for required update"... but I have no way of getting it as far as I know.

Here's the version I'm stuck with: 2.0.12625.0 (January 19, 2011 according to Wikipedia... at your discretion)

Any ideas?

I believe I said that I cleared my cache which includes this method. :/ Maybe it's just the USB is faulty or not readable on the Xbox 360...

You could try burning it to a disk or saving it to a USB drive and updating from there. Instructions - support.xbox.com/.../system-updates

I tried both USB and CD beforehand and it doesn't recognize the root folder or anything in it. The USB method should of worked at least since I think some CD formats are not recognized.

That method is actually not clearing the cache, but it involves removing a previous update. So you have tried that specifically?

Could you rent a copy of a newish game. For example Madden '12 has a dashboard update on the disc and Gears of War 2 is sure to.

Very surprised a USB update didn't work. Have you made sure the USB stick is empty/formatted before you put it on and that its in the root folder, try resetting your cache and ensure your Xbox boot settings and to disc (dont think that matters but try it anyway)

Wiped the cache clean and formatted the USB and it still doesn't respond when I restart the console.

I got Lego Star Wars III recently... I don't think it has the update I need as I unplugged the Ethernet cable to make sure it reads from the disc instead of Xbox Live. I'll look for something that has multiplayer as will more likely have one.
