Playing games with other household members, do I need another Live subscription? Help XBOX illiterate !!!!!

Finally broke down and got my son an XBOX 360 for his birthday over the weekend and I need HELP.  We bought an extra controller and programmed it, and it seemed to work.  But when we went to play a game with him, nothing.  Then I read somewhere that each person needs a subscription/membership to play against one another.  Is this true?  What if we just wanted to play at home like the PS3 and not online?  He was trying to get us to play Plants v Zombies Garden Warfare with him and I cannot figure out how to do this.  Again, another Live subscription?  If so, is this for all XBOX games?  Do we always need to be "connected" to play any game?  I am so confused and XBOX illiterate.
