Need help with account charge.

Here's my problem:

My account was canceled but when I signed back into Live it asked me if I wanted to renew my gold-account.
I did so and it took the money from my account for a 12 month period. Later that evening my Xbox said I still didn't have gold so I paid for another month.

Now my Xbox says I only have a month and that it renews at the end of September. Will I have those 12 months paid when it renews next time? If not, where do I turn to get my money back? Cause there is no way I'm paying for 12 months if I can't use the service. 

Please help me. It would be good to know what's going on.
