NAT = Open, uPnP enabled - trouble connecting to friend (also with Open NAT)?!

Hey there,

As the title says, I have an Open NAT with uPnP enabled (2 360s, a Wii and a PS3 share the router) - and I'm still unable to connect to a friend of mine (who also has an Open NAT).

There was also one other person I had trouble connecting too last night (who I've been able to connect to in the past).

So basically, I'm confused why I'm having problems here and I'm wondering if anybody has any advice on the matter?

Many thanks.

Hi,

If its only one person the problem might be on their end, what is their NAT status and network setup?

Hello,

As stated - their NAT status is also Open.

Also, I am not sure about their network setup. :(

I doubt its your set-up if you can connect ok to other people, if you both have a separate modem and router you could both try connecting direct to your modems with your Xbox as a test to see if one of your routers is the problem

Mine's a modem/router combo, so I can't do that. :(

I'm pretty sure that we can both connect to other people ok (although I had that one issue last night, which has never happened with that person before).

I found this topic randomly online and the situation seems extremely similar to mine - however they never found a cure:

(He's DMZ and I'm uPnP)

Is the problem still happening today then? Ages ago you could get random issues and a fix was to delete each other as friends and re-send friend requests again, not sure if still applies but its worth a go if its still a problem now

Also are you both on the same Internet Service Provider (ISP) or different ones?

I'm pretty sure that we are not the same ISP.

We could try that wishy-washy fix though. :P

heheh it is a bit wishy washy but used to work, but they may have fixed what it used to fix a long time ago.

Ok well sometimes being on the same ISP can be an issue with these strange ones. So its still happening now then ? you can't invite each other directly into a game? Is it all games?

Well, this particular friend only got live a few weeks ago.

Every time I've tried to play something with him (or party up with him) - it has failed. The only times where it has worked was when we had a "middle-man" to allow us to connect. When we are connected this way, we can chat perfectly fine - however we've never actually played together, as the middle-man was always busy on something else.

Games we've tried:

DOA4

Halo Reach

Gears of War 3 Beta

(and naturally the xbox live "party" system itself)

As I briefly mentioned in my opening post, I actually had the same issues with another friend last night - although I cannot remember the last time that I specifically connected to him. (I changed my setup back in February due to gaining a second 360 - although I believe this new setup is far superior for my needs. uPnP never seemed to work on my old Netgear you see)

Still waiting for my friend to head back online so that we can try this "wishy-washy" fix. :P

Oh yeah, I should mention that I'm using a "Belkin F5D8636-4 v2" (speaking of which, this really should be added to the compatability list, IMO) - with no port forwarding/DMZ settings, but uPnP turned on. I've heard that mixing and matching only hinders performance. Also, my xbox is set to dynamic/automatic and not manual/static. Apparently manual doesn't work too good with uPnP either.

I'm currently looking through your unofficial live website forums for similar situations to myself, and I've had some luck - but no cures yet.

Sorry for the triple post.

I came across an interesting statement by yourself in one of the topics.

You state that if somebody is able to bring two 360s online (from the same network) and into the same match without any problems (and presumably with open NATs) - you can't see how the problem is that person's fault. I'm in this situation, me and my brother have both successfully spent long sessions together on Black Ops (and with open NATs). I just thought that I'd clarify.
