My new console stays at the "turn on controller" screen

Hi!
I just bought a new Xbox 360 Slim with Kinect. I hooked it all up, turned it on and the console prompted me to turn on my controller. I did so, and I noticed the controller didn't come pre-synced with the console. I tried syncing them but it doesn't work. The X-Box doesn't even turn on any of the lights on the LED-Display. It is working, since it sends a signal to the TV, but it won't even try to sync the controller. Perhaps it is in some "initial setup" phase but I can't do anything with this console until I get the controller to sync! What should I do?

Thanks in advance!
