My hard drive no longer functions.

I've accepted I will have to buy a new hard drive after getting Error Code 68 and nothing suggested to do has worked, but it seems mindblowingly defeating to have to restart literally 6 years of saved data. I need to transfer data off of my current hard drive into a new one. Also, is there any way I can retrive my gamertag from a new hard drive if data transfer is impossible? I have craploads of microsoft points and a continuing monthly subscription to xbox live. I really don't want to lose my achievements either. PLEASE HELP!

You can Recover your account to a new console, so there's no need to worry about your Points or gamerscore & achievements. If your hard drive is only dying, not dead, it might work on a transfer cable (if you have the original Xbox 360 console, not the newer 360S, whose HDDs have no transfer cable yet) long enough to get your saved games transferred to a new HDD.
