Modem not detecting my Xbox

So we just got a new modem/router for our house. It's the same model as the one we had previously. Our first one got fried during a bad lightning storm so we got a new one. I have been unable to get my xbox to connect to xbox live since we got the new modem. At first I thought my ethernet cable had messed up completely (I've had it for 2 years and my animals have been rough with it so it dying on me was my first thought.) I got a new ethernet cable tonight and still no luck connecting to xbox live. Any ideas on what I could try?

Is your network name and password the same? Cause that may be confusing the wireless signal in the console. It may still be searching for the connection to the older unit, which isn't there anymore.

If so, try changing the name or password.

I tried that, and still no luck. My friend is coming by this weekend with his Xbox and I'm gonna see if his will connect. I read in another forum on a different site that if other devices are able to connect without fail but the xbox won't, then the xbox is probably defective or about to die. Seeing as I've had it since February of 2009, I think there's a high possibility of it about to die. Thank you for your answer, friend!

Greetings BigIron!

Appreciate if you can post up the make and model of your gateway. Is the Xbox directly connected to this gateway with an Ethernet cable?

If you haven't already, restore your Xbox network settings to factory defaults. Here's how:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Wired Network if you are prompted to do so.
  4. Select the Additional Settings tab.
  5. Select Restore to Factory defaults.
  6. Press "B" on your controller and select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

Let us know where this test fails to establish a connection to Xbox LIVE and we'll work from there.
