Microsoft did not recognize change in email, can't log in to xbox live

I have not been able to sign in to xbox live for months now. My original email that is attached to my xbox live account, changed a few years ago.  Microsoft failed to recognize the change and there has been an update to xbox live, which signed me out. I do not know how to get on to an account that shouldn't exist anymore. My new email only changed by a character, but Microsoft didn't recognize the change and I can't access my account. What do I do to have my username for xbox live changed to my new email? (not really new, I have had it for a few years now)

It's not that Microsoft failed to recognize it, it's that you didn't tell them.  You can swap it by doing the following:

Download THIS gamertag to your console, then you'll need to create an EXTRA Microsoft Account at signup.live.com, then you'll need to transfer this gamertag to the EXTRA Microsoft Account using Settings -> Account -> Account Security -> Change Microsoft Account.  Then you'll probably need to wait 30 days, then transfer your regular gamertag to the now free Microsoft Account using the same process.

I can't access the account page on my xbox because I am not connected to xbox live. I do not know the password to my old email account. I don't know how I am going to change my gamertag to the account I want without being able to access the account page.

Go to account.live.com and click on "Can't access account" under the password box.  If it says the Microsoft Account doesn't exist then you get to talk to support and get  escalated.  If it moves forward you'll be given a few options to reset the password, if none of those work there will be an option to fill out a long form and submit it to the Microsoft Account team, do that.  If THAT fails as well talk to support with the rejection notice from the form and they can help from there.

Hey there Conville!

If you don't have access to the old email account, you can try using xbox.com/forgot to see if that helps recover any forgotten information.

If it doesn't, then the next best step will be to use the Contact Us page to set up a support call with an account specialist. Try to remember as much as you can about the account and they will be able to work through your options with you.

Let us know how things go. =)

Edit: Didn't refresh and fredgiblet got here before me. ^_^
