So is the hdd just not showing up or is it just the profile that has disappeared?

Perhaps clearing the cache and deleting any corrupt profiled from the hard drive would fix this issue. Corrupt profiles will not show up as available accounts to sign in when attempting to do so. To delete the profile, go to settings, storage, accounts and delete anything with an exclamation mark in a yellow circle. Clearing the cache is easy enough as well. Highlight your device back at the storage blade and press Y to begin. Then redownload your account accordingly.

Then your Harddrive is bad. To truly test this, plug in a USB stick over 1GB and that is a newer model (After 2009). Once you do this, go to Settings > System > Storage > USB Mass Storage > Configure. Once configured, take out the Harddrive with the console turned off. Turn on the console and try to download the profile to the USB. If it does work, then you may need a Harddrive replacement.

HARDDRIVE WARRANTY:

(US) - 90 days from purchase date.

(Non-US) - 1 year if Harddrive came with console from purchase date.
