Live charges for renewal either very early or very late?

So I decided I was not going to renew my Live Gold this month, and noticed some strange differences between the dates listed on my billing history and when my card shows actual charges being made on my card.

My Live billing history shows I signed up for Gold on Nov 20 and bought points, and those charges show on my card history for those days, then my renewal shows up on my Live billing history on Dec 19, but I don't find a charge again on my card until Jan 12. Since then, my card has been charged each month on the 12th, while my renewals and billing history on Live always show the 19th. In the early hours this morning, March 12, I was charged a renewal fee, but my account is supposed to last until March 19. I went ahead and stopped my auto-renewal, and the March 12 charge is still on my card, but I got an email from MS saying my account will expire on the 20th. I can't figure out if I'm being charged a week early or three weeks late, and why my billing history doesn't show the actual dates I was billed. Is this sort of thing common? Also, all of my charges in Live's billing history say "Partial amount : Gold – 1 Month $9.99" ... what's this Partial amount stuff about?
