I've been having my Xbox for some time now and I bought a year of Xbox Live Gold a few months ago. I have tried so many things now, but I still don't know how to get rid of those frustrating lags. It's really no fun to play like that.
I'll try to answer some of the questions that have been suggested in one of the stickies:

Router brand & model number: NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 (I tried it without the router by directly connecting to the modem, didn't help, but I only played one game against a guy from Barbados, so maybe that doesn't count.)
Network Connection Type: Wired
Things you have tried:
Is UPnP Enabled? Unknown (I didn't receive any error messages, it's just very slow)
Is NAT Type Open? Unknown
Any Error Codes you encounter: None.
What type of internet do you have? Cable. Speedtest says 16 mbits download, 1 upload.(Provider says 30 down, 1 up).
Who is your ISP(Internet Service Provider)? Liwest
After you run "Test Xbox LIVE connection" and click on "More info", what is the exact message shown on screen?
