I want to change my gamertag but don't wanna miss the sale.

I have been waiting all week to change my tag. Upon reaching payday I give Xbox a call and ask if the gamertag I want is avaliable (ZenGaijin) I talk to a woman who informs me the tag is NOT being used. I promptly purchase the points and attempt to change my tag. Unforutunately, when I do this from the console the system says the name is in use. I know for a fact it is not as I have searched for any activity from the gamertag and have been able to find nothing. Frustrated I call back, talk with a new person who does some more searching and says "There is no account in our databases with that name".

I ask what I can do to change this problem and still get the deal of the week deal. I even have a refernece number ready to prove I called when the sale was still going on.

Any help someone can give me to get my name changed would be greatly appreciated

Supposedly, MS has undertaken just such a purge...but they have not related how they determine what gts should be purged.  Regardless, if you are getting the now-dreaded "gamertag taken" you can't use it.  Might as well try another and move on.

But after so many years I think 5+ of inactivity shouldn't they just delete the name? Also, I know the name exists but isn't in use because I originally created that account. Sadly, I cant remember any of the information I used to access the account.

It seems silly that they wouldn't look through and delete the account based on inactivity.

It doesn't matter if there is no activity on the account the fact is that it exists on Zune, and as Danno points out, it exists as a Live account as well.

Sorry to say but you are going to have to accept that you aren't going to get the name you want.

How did you do your search? It was easy to find that the gamertag exists.

A search on zune.net shows that there is indeed a tag with the name 'ZenGaijin' on there. I'm afraid that you are not going to be able to have that name.

The 'gamertag' system is used across other Microsoft services, including Zune. So just because Xbox can't see an account with that name does not mean that one does not exist, and if it is a Zune account then it of course would not show any Xbox activity.
