How to use extermal hard drive to save battlefield 3 HD graphics

I just got the new Battlefield 3 for my xbox and i wanna play with HD graphics but i only have 4GB of memory in my xbox and i can't install the HD Graphics onto my xbox memory. I have 400 GB external Hard Drive and i was wondering could i use it to play with HD Graphics? And what should i do if i have imporntant files on the hard drive and i don't want them to be deleted, can i keep them on the hard drive and use the hard drive with my xbox at the same time? I should have at least 10-20GB free.

Pleas please awnser as fast as you can, and thank you!

You need an actual HDD to install the texture pack. You can only use 16gb of any external drives but you can't install the pack to any type of external memory.

The 400GB drive would have to be FAT32 partitioned/formatted already. If it is, you can choose Customize and add a USB Memory Unit without deleting the existing data on the drive. This is assuming the pack can be installed on a USB Memory Unit. Some add-ons are limited to HDD install only.
