I just wondering if someone can answer a question for me - when I turn my xbox one on, should it (or is there a way to get it to) automatically turn my tv over to its designated hdmi input? Mine doesn't, and for a machine that claims to be the centre of your home media setup its seems to be an annoying oversight? My ps4 (and ps3) do it, I just press the ps button on the controller and it automatically switches to the relevant hdmi channel so why doesn't the xbox one? or am I missing a setting that maybe needs tweaking?

Nope, the Xbox One lacks HDMI-CEC, also called "control over HDMI".  That enables devices to turn on the TV, switch it's inputs or use the TV controller to control them.  For a supposedly all-in-one device, it's a pretty big oversight.
