HDMI port + AV Port

I have an older XBOX 360 that has no optical port.  I purchased http://www.amazon.com/Optical-Audio-Adapter-Xbox-360-Cable/dp/B0042UQLM0/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1355730092&sr=1-1 and followed the very basic connection instructions http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/audio-video-setup-and-use/connect-sound-system

However, as soon as I connect to the A/V port, the signal on the HDMI 'shuts off'... in other words, I can see the video from the HDMI on my monitor, but as soon as I connect the A/V, it seems that the xbox is shutting off the HDMI and only directing through the A/V port.

Is there a way to get these to work together as advertised?

I have never known them to be advertised as working at the same time.

You can't operate two separate audio/video sources at the same time.

I've never had an issue with it on my 360, and I've done it multiple times. I have an older (white) 360 arcade with HDMI. What happens if you boot it up with just the audio connected, and then plug the hdmi in after it's up and running? Do you hear the bootup sound?

All I can suggest would be reading the Support links here and here, and if they don't work, you can try contact Xbox Support art 1-800-4MY-XBOX for assistance.

Good luck!

Is the Audio adapter you purchased the Microsoft official one, or a 3rd-party manufactured one?

Here's what I did:

1 removed A/V cable

2 powered on console with guid button, and held Y + Right Trigger as it started up.

3 turned off console

4 connected a/v cable

5 powered on console

6 saw only darkness on screen

I did the same thing with the A/V cable connected with the same result.

I just took a look at the reviews and they aren't that good, one in particular looked familiar.

"I bought this adapter for new headphones that use the optical output for sound. It is suppose to allow me to continue using the HDMI cable for video. When I have both plugged in, though, the adapter cancels out the video signal to the tv. Therefore, the item is useless to me and does not perform as described and expected."

I've tried it powered off and powered on.  if i pull the A/V adapter while the console is on, the HDMI displays.

thats bothersome!  the description on the Amazon site explicitly stated that this is for using HDMI port for video + A/V for audio.  I've since found another brand that users seem to have better luck with... and I've ordered.  I'm not so upset about being out $5.00, it is more the frustration that waiting for the part to be shipped is like 8 weeks (and this is after waiting 8 weeks for the first one to show up).

Thanks everyone for confirming that this should be possible.
