Having trouble renewing Gold

Apparently my gold was set to auto renew which I didn't know but my main payment option expired so when it tried to auto renew it couldn't. Now I'm trying to renew with a cheaper plan but it keeps giving me an error because of a billing problem on my payment option. Now I'm worried that if I try to use a different payment option it will charge me for the full year plan automatically to try and fix the billing error. Will that actually happen, and if it would is there a way I can avoid it?

sounds like it would charge that new card if you added it to the account. For any other options, you'd best find your answer at 1-800-4MY-XBOX

Since it already tried to charge you, you now have a balance owed. So you would have to add a new payment option to pay off that balance before you can purchase a new membership.
