Hard Drive -> Console Compatability Error

I took my hard drive over to my friend's house to play on my game saves. I plugged in my hard drive and it did a dashboard update. It worked as usual when I was over there, but when I got home, I plugged it in and turned on my console. It didn't have any loading screen or anything, but just went straight to an error message that said

"System Update Stopped"

on the title bar and in the body it said

"Can't read the update from your Xbox 360 Hard Drive. Please reattach it. Your console will automatically restart and continue the update. If the problem persists, visit www.xbox.com/support. Status Code: 3143 - 3151 - 8380 - 0700 - C000 - 0034"

I have tried most things including trying to put the update on a disk and putting it into the console as well as just trying to run the console without the hard drive in it. It still works if I bring my hard drive to my friend's house.

Thanks in advance,

Lonnez

Clearifications:

1) I can't do anything but look at the error message. It goes straight to it and I cannot go to the dashboard at all. I tried pressing the home button and the B button to close the error, but it doesn't work.

2) My friend was participating in the Halo Reach Beta before the full game came out a while ago. I don't see how this makes a difference, though.

3) My Xbox has been broken since January and Microsoft has been unable to fix it. So this means that the dashboard update that caused this error was the one AROUND January 21, 2011. I don't know the exact date.

Do you have a USB flash drive?  If so, remove your hard drive and attach the flash drive, configure it for 360 storage.  If you're unable to do this, then you'll have to make the flash drive work via your friends Xbox and then attach it to your console.  After you apply the update, try your hard drive again.

Let us know how you get on.

Good luck!

The minimum flash drive you can use is 1GB.  You can use any size after the minimum but you can only use 16GB per flash drive.  If you choose 'customize' instead of 'configure now' when you set up your flash drive, you can set the amount of GB's to use for Xbox storage.  So you can use part of it for the Xbox and the other free space can still be used for the PC.

If you don't want to use it any more, just attach the drive back up to your PC, go to 'My Computer', right click on your flash drive and choose 'format'.  Make sure you copy any data you have in the PC part of the drive, otherwise it will be deleted during the format.

This guide will give you more information about USB storage on the Xbox 360:

The instructions on how to apply a system update offline are here. You may need USB Memory Unit space as the updates typically require 128MB of reserve space to operate, but the actual update files do not go on 360-specific storage.

The update is about 100MB in size. It needs to be on a regular FAT32 volume, not stored on 360-specific storage.
