Gerry Harvey Announces A GST-Free Direct Import Gaming Website

Copy and pasta from Kotaku.

"This is insane. Gerry Harvey, he of the fire and brimstone statements against importing goods and services from overseas, has just announced a brand new online service that — get this — allows Australian gamers to import games from overseas at reduced prices, minus the GST."

With postage below $5, I can see Harvey Norman winning back support from local gamers. Some will still *** and moan, but HN has come a long way over the last year or so. Going from overpriced 3+ year old games to what I would think as on-par with JB, Gerry is doing a great job.

Well the prices are pretty much the same as where I usually shop, OZGAMESHOP. So I shall shop at HN from now on depending on the postage time and costs. Wait till people have tried it and see how we go. Could be a short run stunt then an actual investment.

Are the games shipped from Ireland? Would be a bit of a tax fraud if they're shipped from Aus, no?

Yes they're shipped from Ireland. Not sure if I want to try Harvey or just stick with Ozgameshop. $3.95 postage per item. Something about it worries me, he should just lower the price of his retail games. Though some of the games for sale at $26 seem like a pretty good deal.

The stench of hypocrisy is rife with gerry atric. First whinge and moan about the poor retailers copping a bad deal and when that gets you no where join in on the very thing you were moaning about. that old saying if you can beat em join em, onya jerry.

If the post preorders out on time, unlike Zavvi and Ozgameshop who send out dispatch notices and don't actually have it in stock to send to you, then they'll become a good place to buy.

I find it amusing that Harvey Norman use the GST as an excuse, yet still are able to undercut their local stores pre-GST prices.

Here is a comparison of the prices of the X360 on the "Direct Import" sites front page, and the price of the same game (without GST) on the Harvey Norman local site:

 • Assassin Creed: Revelation

 • Battlefield 3
 • HN Direct Import $59
 • HN Local $61.10 (excluding GST)
 • $2.10 disparity.  That's not too bad.

 • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
 • HN Direct Import $63
 • HN Local $76.40 (excluding GST)
 • $13.40 disparity

 • Deus EX: Human Revolution
 • HN Direct Import $27
 • HN Local $70.20 (excluding GST)
 • $43.20 disparity

 • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
 • HN Direct Import $59
 • HN Local $80.00 (excluding GST)
 • $21.00 disparity

If Gerry Harvey is serious about competing against internet imports, maybe he should try to match their prices in the local stores.  Stop using the GST as an excuse.

Wouldn't bother with this site at all. Shipping cost per item isn't good and the prices aren't that fantastic. I can still pick up better deals at Ozgameshop or Zavvi/The Hut.

What about all the additional costs involved in having an actual storefront compared with an online site?
What about all the additional costs involved in having an actual storefront compared with an online site?
There are other local retail chains that devote much more store space to video games than Harvey Norman does.  They are able to offer discounted prices, even though they have the same overheads.  So that's not an excuse.

Not possible. The problem isn't GST but the wholesale price. Retailers in Australia (online or no) cannot compete with OS retailers as the wholesale price is significantly higher here.
