Gamertags unused but still unavailable?

I've tried changing my gamertag 5 times to names I want and all the time it gives me the "This gamertag is already in use" error. Yet, when I try and add the gamertag it says there is no account with it? and when I go to the xbox profile for that gamertag I get an error like the one below. This page has come up for 5 gamertags that I've tried, and I'd like to know why? and how I can get this gamertag.

Not finding the gamertag tells you very little; the only way to be sure that a gamertag is available is to try to change yours to the desired one. In your case, "C a l y p s o" exists, so you can't have the version without spaces (but "adding" a 'tag won't look for spacing variants).

This is covered in a sticky post in this very forum, "Managing my Xbox LIVE Account".

Most of the time if you are seeing a message saying the GT you want is unavailable, it’s true. One thing to remember is that spaces and capitalization don’t make your GT unique. For example, “Major Nelson”, “MajorNelson”, and “MaJoRnElSoN” are all the same GT.

GTs are also tied to services like Zune or Games for Windows LIVE. If a GT doesn't exist on Xbox, it might be in use on one of those services. If you try sending the GT you want a friend request and it says it’s not a valid GT that just means it isn’t used on Xbox LIVE, but it could be used for Zune or GFWL.[/quote]

Hi,

This error can occur when a gamertag is being used on Zune. Zune and Xbox use the same gamertag system, hence why it is coming up as taken.

It's recommended you choose another gamertag.
