Gamertag - Shouldn't be my full name...

When setting up my LIVE account, I either was not prompted or missed the spot to enter my gamertag, and it took my full name instead.

Can I get this changed somehow?

You get one free one when you set up your account, after that it's $10 a pop.  If you click on your guy/gal in the "My Xbox channel, you'll see the Change Gamertag option there.

I called in to support and they said that I had to either get somebody's attention on the forums, or wait for somebody to report my name for having personally identifying information.  Apparently they can't fix it over the phone, but getting reported will give me a free change.

Anybody feel like reporting me?

You really don't want a FNC against your account.

Why's that?

From my POV, I really don't want a paid name change against my account for something as silly as not seeing/getting a box during account creation.

A FNC complaint against your account might give MS the idea that you are up to something that violates the TOU.  Then you might get an account ban.  In which case, your name problem would be moot...since your account would be banned from Live anyway.  Then you would have to buy another Gold account and start over.

best take what you have and pay closer attention to what you doing in case you have to do this all over again...

I'd rather get reported and have it dealt with.

If MS is going to ban me over it, it's probably best that I find out they won't be getting more of my money now, rather than later =]

Just an FYI though, even if someone files a complaint on you, it can still take months before they'll actually issue a FNC if they do.

Well, you have three options to change your name -

1) Create a new gamertag.

Simple and to the point. This tag is brand new, has next to no gamerscore, and I doubt you bought anything (your game history shows only a single game), so you have no licences to lose. Even if you do, your new account should be able to use any content your old account bought as long as you're on the same console.

2) Receive a forced name change.

Your gamertag is in violation on the terms of use, so a report against you would be as legit as if your gamertag contained the f-bomb. However, there are issues with this. First, you'll need to be reported on Xbox live, and there is no way to report someone you've never played with. Second, it takes time for reports to go through - it might take weeks or months. Finally, having a FNC (forced name change, not free name change) is a violation against  your account. XBLPETs (essentially the xbox police - they bust all the cheaters, hackers, bad-language users, and other rule-breakers) will see your history and see a FNC. If you insist on a forced name change, you might as well post on this section ----> http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/f/41.aspx <----- and ask for one. That's where the XBLPETs are in the fourms.

3) Pay 800 Microsoft points.

Yes, they normally sell for $10. But there is no violation history for paid name changes.

Thanks Toad, I'll give a try at that forum.

It's really the principal of the thing about not paying for a name change.  It's not like I chose a bad one that I got sick of, it's that I really don't want my name as my gamertag at all.
