@STEPHENCASEMORE - Be aware that if you opened your console, it is no longer eligible for repair service through Microsoft, paid or not.

i had this problem with an old console that was out of warrenty and microsoft wanted to charge me £100 for repairs (which i did not have at the time) but anyway it turned out that the problem was just the cable came loose that connects the disk drive to the motherboard.

It sounds as if your drive is on the way out, that means it is going to need to be repaired. http://support.xbox.com/en-gb/pages/xbox-360/troubleshoot/repair/repair-process.aspx

If your console is under 12 months old then the repair will be free. However it if it is outside of the 12 months warranty then you are going to have to pay £62/$99 if arranged on the internet, or £75/$119 if arranged over the phone.

However if the console is under 12 months old, then you could try returning it to the store you bought it from for an exchange.
