After I restarted my router I turned my xbox back on and tried connecting to live but it says I dont have an ethernet cable plugged in and i checked the back of my xbox and the green light wasnt flashing i tried fiddling it around to see if it would recognize it but no luck. I then unplugged the cable and plugged it into my laptop and my laptop reads the cable and i can connect to the internet with it so cant be the cable so it must be something to do with my xbox. please help!!!!

This seems to be a common problem with some people after a quick Google search, and I haven't found really any glaring solutions.

The easiest course of action would be to just buy a Wireless Adapter for your Xbox 360, and just connecting it to your router. Since you already have a laptop, I'm assuming you have a Wireless Router. Sure, it's expensive, but really it's probably the easiest way to fix the problem.

If using a different ethernet cable is yielding the same results, then I'm afraid the port and console will need to be repaired. You can use a wireless adapter, as Mythic suggested, but be sure to check your warranty status here, to see if you qualify for a free repair. If you do, I suggest taking it while you can.
