Error code: 3151-0000-D080-0200-8007-045D Can't download updates

I've had the above error code when trying to download any updates for games, and my Xbox has just become incredibly slow, and Xbox live is just a complete hassle trying to connect to.

Any solutions or ideas I would be grateful for

The suggestion from the troubleshooter:

A storage device (memory unit or hard drive) was not found during the software update. Follow these steps:

Turn off your console.

Remove all console storage devices, including any USB flash drives, external hard drives, or the internal hard drive on the Xbox 360 S console. Learn how to remove the hard drive.

Add your primary storage device, for example, the hard drive.

Turn on the console

Try updating the console again.

The troubleshooter disregards those numbers as the ending numbers are the most important. Have you tried the above solution?

I've been getting this error too.  I've talked to several tech people from XBOX and the last person told me it was because of the type of modem I have (2Wire).  Now, I don't believe this because not only because I don't see how that can have an effect on updating games (it hasn't had a problem downloading other things like map packs) but I've also had the same modem since I signed up for XBL 4 years ago and this is the first time I've had a problem updating games.

Now, I've got the latest system update, cleared cache many times, deleted and recovered my gamertag a few times and I think there's a couple other things I tried as well and still have this problem.

Oh, also, I didn't start having this problem until I got a Kinect and plugged it in.  Ever since then (January) I've had this problem.

According to the update troubleshooter, this error code appears when a memory device is not detected. Gonzo, have you tried configuring a USB drive for use with Xbox 360, to see if that allows you to download without issue?

No I haven't done that, but if my hard drive is still attached to the console why would it not detect it?

Just like a computer, a hard drive will stop detecting when it starts dying or when it becomes corrupted. Hard drives are all the same in practice, a hard drive that is constantly used has an expected life of 4 to 6 years under ideal conditions. Ideal conditions include environmental conditions such as heat, direct sunlight on the console, power surges, etc. they also include how much you move the console around and how much you write to it and delete from it but the reading and writing can't really be avoided.
