Disconnecting from XBL when I load games

I have a wired connection and up until a few weeks ago I have had no issues with my connection to XBL marketplace or any games.  Now when I turn my xbox on and load any game, I immediately get disconnected from XBL.  When I try to reconnect it fails and lets me test the connection which obviously returns me to the xbox dashboard.  Once out of the game and back to the dashboard, my XBL connects again without any problems.  I can download and search the marketplace without an issue.  My roommate has an xbox 360 also and hasn't had any connection issues even when we try the same games at the same time.  I dont know much about the technical side of this but any info or help would be appreciated!

That only happens when you need an Update for that game, try and wait after you get disconnected and see if anything pops up.

That's not it, because since this started happening I've played through two complete campaigns on Black Ops and Gears of War 3.  It's exactly like what happens if there is an update but I'm sure there's and its with every game. Thanks though

Does this only happen with your gamertag on this console or are other live accounts also being disconnected from live when you try to play a game? If it's a whole console issue I would suggeset clearing the cache in the memory portion of system settings. <---- @!THIS DOES NOT MEAN FORMAT!@

You will have to redownload updates but it may help in the long run.

If this is only for this account go ahead and use recover account to redownload the profile from xbox's servers.

Let me know more and I'll help you out.

Alright so I haven't tried another gamertag on my xbox but I cleared my cache then went into a game again and got disconnected even before an update was downloaded.  And when I tried to recover my account the xbox went to a loading screen and said "Downloading updates. Please wait." for a few minutes then said "Can't connect to xbox live. Please test connection." so I did and once again it connected but won't let me connect when I want to recover an account so I'm still lost

Are you using a wireless connection to your xbox? Could be TRYING to update but the wireless is not strong enough. I would suggest IF you are wireless to connect a wire to your xbox.

If you are wired, try rebooting your home network. Sounds like a possible Internet issue.

Also, let us know your connection setup. Would help alot

I'm at college and we aren't supposed to use wireless routers so I'm using a wired connection through a Linksys SE1500 ethernet switch (idk if that means anything to you).  But my roommate's xbox live is set up through the same connections and works fine.  And also this just recently started happening, previously I had the same connection set up and I could play games on XBL perfectly fine

I would try like above said. Restart your router, and also recommend resetting your modem by powering it off for 30 sec to a minute.

If all still fails, try placing the I.P adress (settings -> Network -> Settings) of your XBOX in the DMZ or out of the firewall.  This does required router hacking, so make sure you read carefully how to do it, and only do it in case of absolute failure of the connection.
