Disc Tray Spontaneously Opens

By and large I've enjoyed my 360 and for most of its life I haven't experienced too much difficulty with it. The first real problem of note was when the Red Ring of Death hit last August just before the three year warranty expired. But I got the machine serviced quickly and all was well.

Unfortunately, a new problem has struck. It started either around the end of last year or the beginning of this year. It strikes at seemingly random intervals. It can happen while I'm playing a game (and it's occured while I've had a wide variety of games being played). It can happen while I'm watching a DVD. And it can even happen after I leave the console on for a while without playing anything. When the problem strikes, the power light begins to flash and the disc tray opens. I'm instantly sent to the Dashboard (assuming that I wasn't already there). Sometimes the disc tray stays open. Sometimes it closes. Sometimes after it closes it immediately reopens. And I've even seen the disc tray open two inches and close before opening even halfway. On my television, the disc tray status is displayed as 'Open' or 'Reading' or 'Closed' (it appears to be somewhat random regarding which of the messages is actually displayed). The power light continues to flash, and despite what is displayed for the disc tray status, the disc in the tray isn't actually read. Things remain this way until I manually intervene. Typically that requires either pressing the 'X' button on my controller while the disc tray is selected on the Dashboard or manually pressing the disc tray open/close button next to the tray on the front of my console. After doing this (usually only once, but sometimes it needs to be repeated a few times) the problem clears itself. The power light stops flashing, and the console starts reading the disc. All is well - at least until the next time that it happens.

Needless to say, this is very frustrating. I came to the forums earlier this year (February, iirc) hoping for a solution. There was a LOT of discussion about this, and the problem seemed to be fairly widespread. Unfortunately, no one seemed to have a solution so I gave up. But now I've returned to the forum once again and discovered that instead of dominating the threads, discussion of the problem has apparently completely disappeared. That would suggest that a solution was discovered.

Is that true? Did someone figure out how to correct this problem?

In case it's useful, I have an older-model console with it's original 20GB hard drive.

Well the power light flashes when the disc tray opens or closes so that is normal OP. But the tray opening itself certainly is not.

I have had a look for some info on the support site about this problem and cant find anything at all.

So if no one else has any suggestions phoning support might be the way to go. But if I was going to hazard a guess it seems like there is an issue internally if this keeps happening, so a service might be needed.
Hopefully not though as someone else will have a solution for you.

HAve you tried not playing with the faceplate on the console? The faceplate might be causing that issue if it is not then You will have to do what GreyPilgrim Said "  it seems like there is an issue internally if this keeps happening, so a service might be needed."
