Direct to Modem Connection failure

The router I've been using has chucked out on me, so I thought that directly connecting my Xbox360 to the Charter cable modem that I have would work, but it's not. When I tested the connection initially it said that it wasn't able to get an IP address from the modem and it gave me a link a portion of this site specifically set up to troubleshoot IP address problems and the like. I tried everything but none of it worked. When I entered an alternate MAC address and the IPv4, submask, and gateway addresses manually it said that it wasn't able to connect with a static address and to look for something called MAC filtering. I tried Googling it, but it didn't bring up anything for Charter modems other than troubleshooting for Mac computers. What exactly is the problem here and how can I fix this?
