[Update] It's official: A new Counter-Strike game is heading our way in early 2012. Counter-Strike: Global Offense will be releasing on the PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade. Valve says the game, which is being developed by Hidden Path Entertainment, expands on the game's original action.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely mod became the most-played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next-gen consoles and the Mac."

A version of the game was ported to the Xbox in 2003, but it's historically been a PC franchise. It should be interesting to see how console audiences who grew up with Call of Duty respond to the game.

[Original Story] Counter-Strike remains one of the preeminent competitive shooters around, even more than a decade since its release. If you go to any major eSporting event, you're bound to see the game in action. Elements of the game have even transcended the virtual world. While it remains popular, fans have been asking about a sequel for years now. And Valve has been dodging the subject for nearly as long. If recent rumors and reports are to be believed, however, a new Counter-Strike is on the horizon.

A post on eSports site ESEA has broken down some of the details, which are purportedly from pro players and others who recently visited Valve's offices to give feedback on the upcoming game's development. The game is supposedly called Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and it could be released as early as the first quarter of next year. It's said to be running on an updated version of Valve's Source engine, and it focuses on 5 on 5 gameplay. There are also obvious additions such as new guns, maps, and grenades.

An official press release is said to be on its way, and we'll be sure to update you if and when it hits. In the meantime, does any of this stuff sound interesting to you?

Sounds good but ill get it for Pc

I'll try to not get too excited, but it is good news.

I remember when Quake got announced that it was coming to XBLA. The online was a mess at launch, I don't even know if it got fixed at all.

Brilliant news. Now please please please don't add anything gimpy like killstreaks. This should be great and I can see it moving a shedload of copies too.

And yes Sonic, Quake XBLA was and still is a massive f*ck up. Laggy as hell, and the extremely fast pace and lack of autoaim really doesn't lend itself well to a controller, so you get a lot of awkward circle strafing one on one battles...

This will be far better suited and if VALVe get the netcode right it will be the ***.

yep that and ava needs to come to the console

Yes i so want this game

Sounds good, I'll keep an eye out fro this one when it comes out.

Brilliant news, Cant wait. I invested over 100 hours on Counter strike source on the PC.

i used to play it all the time on pc aswell it was awesome fun back in the day
