Connecting to a computer flat screen instead of a television screen

I was told by the store salesman that the x-box could be connected to a computer flat screen instead of a television screen.  The connecting cables that come with either the x-box or the computer are not compatible with each other. Does anyone have a solution on how to make this connection?  I could not find any cables that look like they will work.

If the monitor supports HDMI, use an HDMI cable. If not, use an HDMI to DVI cable.

If the monitor only supports VGA, use the AV port VGA cable.

You can get the VGA cable on eBay for about $4. You can even use an older CRT monitor.  In that case you may have to buy an adapter to connect the two cables together, which can be had for about $2.  Much cheaper than buying a new TV or monitor.  For sound you can use any standard set of headphones along with an adapter which runs about $3 at Radio Shack.
