Configuring External Hard Drive

I want to hook up my external hard drive to my 360 so I can play movies from it, but the 360 says it has to *delete everything* from my 1 TB external in order to create a 16 GB partition. Is there any way to configure my external without the 360 wiping everything that's on it?

Movies are not played back from System Settings, Memory, but from the specific media playback panel.

If the drive is not formatted/partitioned as FAT32 or HFS+, the 360 will not be able to read it. Many large external drives come partitioned/formatted as NTFS from the factory. The 360 cannot read NTFS volumes.

Thanks, but can the drive be formatted without the 360 deleting everything that's already on my external hard drive, or will I just have to rebackup everything after the 360 deletes it and formats it?
