cant connect to xbl at all with everything plugged in?

to connect my xbox to xbox live i use a wired connection (internet cable) from my xbox to my modem, but when i try to connect it says, error and everything so i go to test connection and it  tells me to make sure the cable is plugged in to both the xbox and my modem when it already is? i can access the internet on my pc but not my xbox, and the wire i use for my xbox i've used for the pc to see if there was a problem with the wire but it works fine on the pc, so does that mean it could be a problem with my modem or whatever it called? or is my xbox broken or something?

What kind of a modem do you have? Make and model?

Are there four ethernet sockets on the back of it? If so, try plugging the Xbox cable into another socket on the back of the 'modem' (in which case, it's really a 'gateway').

Alas, you have the infamous 2Wire 2701 gateway.

If you can unplug the cable from the back of the Xbox, plug it into the PC and the PC works, then it may be repair time.

Use the Click2Call system to get to the head of the queue. Almost always, the hold time is less than a minute per the web page.

1) Go to support.xbox.com

2) At upper right click on SIGN IN to sign in w/ your Windows Live ID & pswd

3) Go to the dark grey bar at bottom. Find CONTACT US at left and click on it

4) On the Contact Us page, set Prduct to Xbox LIVE, set Category to Connect to Xbox LIVE and Issue Type to Networking or Technical Issues

5) Scroll down to REQUEST A CALL FROM SUPPORT and click on REQUEST A CALL

6) You will be prompted for your password again

7) On the Request A Call screen, check (and, if needed, update) your phone number in Step 1, and put your description in the Step 2 'Tell us more about your issue' box then click the green SUBMIT button at lower left.

Hi,

Have you had any storms lately? If you have tried different ports in your router/modem and different cables then as Vibroplex says it is likely the Ethernet port is broken.

If you have had a storm that has damaged the adapter I would suggest using power surge protectors and an RJ45 power surge couple in future to try to stop it happening again.
