Cannot connect, Xbox Live account is in use

I tried searching the forums for this but I could not find the right topic. I created my xbox live account on my computer the week before last, mostly because I was excited about getting my xbox 360. I tried last night to connect it to xbox live to get my first month of free live but it gave me an error that the account was in use. I have not put this account on any xbox (Id actually like to change my gamer tag) and I'd like to use the email I have associated with this account rather than creating another. Thanks for any help!

To further clarify my wife can set up an account just fine however she did not have one on the website first.

Try clearing your cache.  If you do NOT know how to do this, then please click here support.xbox.com/.../clear-system-cache  If that doesn't work, then if you live in the US, then give customer service a call at 1-800-4MY- XBOX (See your manual for more details) Thanks for becoming apart of Xbox!
