Cannot connect to XBL unless I test connection

This is a repost that was deleted (and unsolved) from the old forums.

Since the Kinnect update last year my ancient (no HDMI port) console will not connect to XBL unless, and only if, I test the connection first.

Once the connection test is complete I can connect to XBL with no issues, then log out, log back in, change gamertags, etc etc... UNTIL the console is turned off. Once off, you have to repeat the test ritual to log back in.

Scenario:

  • Console with 20GB drive. Worked fine, no issues connecting to XBL.
  • Kinnect comes out and all consoles get the update regardless of having a Kinnect or not. (I do NOT.)
  • Console stopped connecting to XBL unless connection was tested first.
  • Installed a new 250GB drive on console. CONNECTED INSTANTLY TO XBL... until dash updated including latest Kinnect crap.
  • Resume ritual of testing connection...

Has anyone else dealt with this? If so - what was the solution?

I would suggest trying to install the newest live update because maybe the other one was updated w/ errors so go to Xbox.com/Update and get the newest update to see if that will help you out

Thanks but all updates get fed automatically from XBL... THAT is how this all started - with the Kinect update. (I don't have a Kinect... don't want one... won't get one... ) XBL won't let me roll back to an earlier dash without the Kinect options.

My console is an early console withOUT an HDMI port so it may be an issue that just affects older consoles.

Everything worked fine - there was no issue signing in until Kinect update came along.

Network equipment was same before as it is now although I've added a XBOX wireless connector to the console. Wired or wireless it's the same behavior - must test connection before it will connect then it's fine until the console is switched off.

I made this "go away" when I installed a 250gb drive to replace the 20gb drive...--> and it connected instantly... <--- then XBL updated it and the problem was right back.

I have the same issue its not the new xbox but it does have a HDMI port so i dont think its just the old ones. I have to connect through my lap top so that may be why it happens to me

*head banging against keyboard*

It's the same network equipment that works flawlessly all day long after we "Test" the connection via the console.

It's the same network equipment that worked flawlessly PRIOR to the Kinnect dash.

It's the same network equipment that worked flawlessly on an old USED HARD DRIVE -AND- A NEW HARD DRIVE PRIOR TO BOTH UPDATING TO A KINNECT DASHBOARD AFTER BEING PUT ONTO THE CONSOLE.

It's something in the update that doesn't play well with this console.

Hey Slodad, I'm sorry for the frustration, but having the make and model of that equipment will help us investigate the issue. I take it you've since accepted the most recent update, and the issue is persisting? Also, I'm curious--what method did you use to transfer your data to the new HDD? Was the GT recovered, at all?

I have the same problem.     It started when I switch routers.   I had a linksys wrt54g.,   An bought a buffalo which uses the wrt54g software.   Ive set up a dmz for the xbox and opened all the ports and still it won't connect automatically.

But it WILL connect every time if I TEST THE CONNECTION first.   I have an open NAT while playing.   Just can't connect automatically.
